Projects - Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy

BADMAAL (Somali Sustainable Fisheries Development Project)

The Project Background

The Somali Sustainable Fisheries Development Project - Badmaal (P178032) is a six-year investment in Somalia's sustainable fisheries development.

The project is implemented by the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy (MFBE) of the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS). The project has three components: increasing the capacity of communities to benefit from sustainable marine fisheries, strengthening marine fisheries governance and management, and project management monitoring and evaluation. The Badmaal Project specifies that the infrastructure must be climate resilient. This means that the infrastructure will be adapted to or can withstand fluctuations stemming from climate change. Some examples include being able to withstand storm surges, sea level rise and flooding. The Project aims to support the construction of 12 small-scale fisheries infrastructure facilities, and 3 more complex infrastructure facilities, such as jetties.

The project aims at the improvement of effective and efficient management of selected fisheries and enhancement of sustainable economic benefits from the fisheries sector, including value chains, for the governments, private sector investors and coastal communities.

Project Development Objective

The Project Development Objective is to improve the capacity of targeted communities and authorities to benefit from and effectively manage selected fisheries.
